GovMark Council's Stephen O'Keeffe Speaks with Anne Armstrong, Publisher 1105 Government Information Group and Jeff Calore, General Manager, Sales and Marketing, 1105 Government Information Group
An excerpt of the interview follows:
GovMark Council (GMC): What can you tell us about your parent company?
Anne: The short answer is that 1105 Media is a new company created to build a powerful, integrated B2B media company. The PostNewsweek Tech Media purchase is one of the larger purchases to date and is part of that effort. The company is headquartered in Chatsworth, California, although we have large installations of people in Framingham, Seattle, and Irvine.
Jeff: As a go-forward, we're messaging and branding that new business unit entity as 1105 Media Government Information Group.
Anne: We wanted to make a very clear statement that all are joining something new. [FCW is] not taking over GCN.
GMC: Conventional thinking says 1+1 does not equal three. Why did you do this, and what is your vision for the future?
Anne: Well, we think that we can make 1+1 equal three. We have been locked in sort of a competitive mode with GCN for 20 years, and a lot of energy has been put into that competition that I think can be put into creating deeper, richer products. If we're not sending two people to cover every news story, then we can send one person to cover the news story, and the other person can do a different story which we wouldn't have had time to do. We're going to create different editorial points of view. The products will be different. Complementary, but different. The circulation will reflect what we believe would be the readership that would be interested in these different products. In a broad way, we can say that FCW is seen now by a lot of people as more of the enterprise book, and GCN is more of a technology read, and we will probably emphasize those differences and make them a little more obvious. We'll very likely move reporters from one book to another depending on their strengths and the direction we see the books going in.
GMC: Are you planning on going forward with all of the print products?
Anne: Right now, we are.
GMC: Including Government Leader?
Anne: Government Leader is up for discussion. We have a number of ideas about it. Until we pull the circulation, and look at it and run some numbers, I don't want to commit on that. What I'd like to do with it is make it a state and local pub. I think there is space for that. I think there is a lot of interest right now in state and local. It's hard to cover state and local from a news point of view, but if you look at a management and case study point of view, there are a lot of interesting stories to tell, and I think people would be interested in them. I would like to have a state and local publication in our portfolio of products. I also have to be realistic. We basically have three new products which will take a certain amount of time and investment to grow, and I think what we'll have to do is figure out the best bets for the growth.
GMC: Is the publishing relationship with The Washington Post dead?
Anne: No. We are going to continue providing information to them as long as they find it useful.
GMC: Are you still maintaining the relationship with USA Today?
Anne: Yes, as far as I know. Nobody has indicated that they do not want to.
GMC: What is your biggest challenge going forward?
Anne: There are so many moving pieces and keeping an eye on all of them is going to be a little bit of a challenge. We're in the process of contracting for some additional space in Falls Church, and sometime in the April timeframe we'll be able to move the rest of the staff out to Falls Church. I think the challenge is going to be creating a new culture of cooperation after all these years of competition. I definitely think we can do it. I think the fact that we're willing to invest and help build these products will not be lost on the former PostNewsweek staff.
